Definition: Selection handles surround the border of a graphic object and indicate to the user and to the program, that the object is currently selected and ready for something further to happen.
Selection handles are indicated by small, white or black circles or squares around the border of the selected object. (They vary between circles or squares depending on the program you are using.) When you click somewhere else on the screen, the selection handles disappear because the object is no longer selected.
Examples: Mary clicked on the company logo graphic on the PowerPoint slide. After clicking on the logo, selection handles appeared to indicate to Mary that the object was ready for the next action -- in this case Mary wanted to move it to a new location.
