10 Things to Know About PowerPoint Sound and Music

Tips and Tutorials About Using Sound and Music in PowerPoint

By , About.com Guide

We have all watched PowerPoint presentations that had the added effect of sound and/or music. Here are ten tips or tutorials about using sound and music in your PowerPoint presentations.

1. Add Music or Sound to a PowerPoint Presentation

Sound or music files can be saved on your computer in many formats that can be used in PowerPoint 2007, such as MP3 or WAV files. You can add these types of sound files onto any slide in your presentation. However, only WAV type sound files can be embedded into your presentation.

Add a narration to your presentation so that it can be run unattended -- like at a kiosk while you are not there. Or -- how about recording the sound of a clanking motor if your presentation is about fixing a car?

In PowerPoint 2007, you can play all or just a portion of a CD track over one or many slides. You decide when the CD track starts to play and when it will end.

    A question from a reader:
"If I receive a PowerPoint presentation that is already in the slide show format, how can I retrieve the music or sound files since they are embedded in the presentation?"

    6. Hide Sound Icon on PowerPoint 2007 Slides

Most of you have probably seen a PowerPoint presentation that contained music or sound. But, have you ever seen one that played sound, but also showed the sound icon on the slide(s)? I imagine you have. To me, this would indicate that the presenter was new to the role. Here is how to hide the sound icon.

    7. Add Sound Effects to Animations

Sound effects, on animations, can be used sparingly, but effectively. Add the sound of a cash register, for instance, when sales are high for the quarter.

    8. PowerPoint Sound and Music Problems with Emailing

The music or sounds play fine on your computer, but when you email the PowerPoint presentation to a friend, they hear no sounds at all. Why?

    9. Why Won't the Music Play When I Redisplay a PowerPoint Slide?

The sound played just fine the first time through the PowerPoint slide show. However, when the presenter returned to the same slide during the question period of the presentation, the sound would not play again. Why?

    10. Remove Extra Sounds from the PowerPoint Transition Sound List

It seemed like a good idea at the time. After using the Other Sound... option to utilize several sounds not currently in the list, the presenter changed her mind and did not want to use any of these sounds again. These sounds remained in the list and this made for additional scrolling. How do you remove these additional sound titles from this list?
