How Do I Add a Degree Symbol on a PowerPoint Slide?

A question from a reader:
"I am teaching a high school math class and want to use PowerPoint for some visuals. I am trying to find the "degree" symbol, without success, to insert onto a slide. Can you tell me how to do this?"

METHOD ONE: Insert a Degree Symbol Using the PowerPoint Ribbon

  1. Click on the slide where you would like to insert the degree symbol.
  2. Click on the Insert tab of the ribbon to activate it.
  3. Near the right end of the ribbon, click on the Symbol button. The Symbol dialog box opens.
  4. Make sure that Normal text is selected as the Font type, and choose Superscripts and Subscripts as the Subset.
  5. Click the drop down button beside the Superscripts and Subscripts text box and scroll to find the degree button.
  6. Click on the degree button to select it.
  7. Click on the Insert button.
  8. Click on the Close button to close the Symbol dialog box.

METHOD TWO: Insert a Degree Symbol Using a Shortcut Key Combination

Many computer users prefer to use a shortcut key combination to do specific tasks in any given program. PowerPoint is no exception.

If Using a Standard Keyboard to Insert a Degree Symbol
  1. Click on the slide where you would like to insert the degree symbol.
  2. Make sure that the Num Lock has been depressed on your keyboard so that you have activated the number pad.
  3. The shortcut key combination for inserting a degree symbol is Alt + 0176. This is achieved by doing the following:
    • Hold the Alt key
    • While the Alt key is depressed, use the number keypad to press 0176, pressing each number in succession.
(Note - This process will not work if you use the standard number keys above the letter keys. The number keypad must be used.)
    • Release the Alt key and the degree symbol should appear on your slide.

If Using a Laptop Without a Number Keypad to Insert a Degree Symbol

Every laptop keyboard includes a Fn key (known as the Function key). This Fn key is used to access additional features that are not normally available due to the lessor number of keys on a standard laptop keyboard.

The text on the Fn key will be of a different color than the other keys. You will note on other keys that numbers or symbols are printed in this same color as on the Fn key. This indicates to you that you need to press the Fn key while pressing the required key in order to insert that number or symbol into your document. The method to use a shortcut key combination for the degree symbol is as follows:

  • The shortcut key combination, (on a laptop without a number keypad), for inserting a degree symbol is Fn + Alt + 0176. This is achieved by doing the following:
    1. Hold the Alt and Fn keys simultaneously.
    2. While these two keys are depressed, look on the keyboard for the different colored indications of the number pad. (Usually these are located on the m,j,k,l, and u,i,o and 7,8,9 keys)
    3. Press the keys showing 0176, pressing each number in succession.
    4. Release the Alt and Fn keys and the degree symbol should appear on your slide.
