PowerPoint file extensions

The file extension for a PowerPoint show is .pps and the file extension for a PowerPoint presentation is .ppt. This file extension tells PowerPoint whether this file is ready for prime time (a PowerPoint show) or is still in the creation stage (a PowerPoint presentation).

File extensions not showing

If the file extensions do not show up on your computer when you view a list of filenames, the feature is currently turned off. This is the default setting when you first install Windows on your computer.

To turn file extensions on

  1. Open any window that will display a list of filenames.
  2. Choose Tools > Folder Options...
  3. Select the View tab, in the Folder Options dialog box.
  4. Remove the check mark beside the listing for "Hide extensions for known file types".
  5. Click OK.
