  • Screen shots for this tutorial are for PowerPoint 2007 only. Steps for PowerPoint 2003 and earlier versions are similar, and are listed below in text only.

  • Best practice in all versions of PowerPoint is to first optimize your photos to the desired size you want before inserting them in your slide show. This reduces both the visual size and the file size of the photos.

  • If you want your photo to cover the entire slide, optimize your photo to be 7.5 inches high by 10 inches wide. PowerPoint 2007 will do this automatically when you insert a large photo onto a slide. However, this must be done manually in PowerPoint 2003 and earlier versions.

  • PowerPoint 2007 compresses all pictures by default. This is not the case in PowerPoint 2003 and earlier. If you did not optimize your photos first, you can compress all the photos in your presentation at one time. However, this feature is not available in all earlier versions of PowerPoint.
  • PowerPoint 2007
    1. Choose a blank slide layout.
    2. Click on the Insert tab of the ribbon.
    3. Click on Picture.
    4. Locate the picture on your computer.
    5. Click the Insert button.
  • PowerPoint 2003 and earlier
    1. Choose a blank slide layout.
    2. Choose Insert > Picture > From File... from the menu.
    3. Locate the picture on your computer.
    4. Click the Insert button.
