Top 9 Tips to Jazz Up Your Digital Photo Albums

By Wendy Russell, About.com

Creating a digital photo album in PowerPoint is easy. You can make it a really special photo album by adding a few "bells and whistles" to jazz it up.

1. Optimize Your Photos Before Inserting Them into the Photo Album

The most important step in creating any digital photo album is to first optimize each photo to get the best part of the picture at a reduced file size.

When you shot your photos, you probably used a high resolution in order to get clear, crisp pictures. This is a great idea for prints of the picture. However, the huge file size that results for each picture, will increase the finished size of your photo album and slow down its presentation.

2. How to Create a Digital Photo Album in PowerPoint

Once your photos are optimized, then it is on to creating the digital photo album in PowerPoint. This new feature in PowerPoint 2003 makes it a snap to create a photo album, or many photo albums. Why not create separate albums for all the different categories of your pictures -- such as -- family outings, vacations, your garden in bloom, baby's first steps? Later you can burn these photo albums to CDs, DVDs or create a web page to show relatives in far off places.

3. Add a Colorful Design to Act as a Backdrop for Your Pictures

PowerPoint has a number of design templates included with the program. Rather than a plain white background, perhaps you might like a splash of color applied to the entire digital photo album.

4. Rearrange the Picture Slides in the Digital Photo Album

Once you have added pictures to the photo album, you may decide that you don't like the order of some of the slides. It is an easy matter to rearrange or delete any of the slides in the photo album.

5. Add Transitions to the Digital Photo Album

Slide transitions add some visual interest to the digital photo album. You can choose to use the same transition on every slide, or apply different transitions to each slide. There is even a random transition feature, so that PowerPoint will do all the work for you.

6. Apply Custom Animations to Your Pictures

Custom animations are the movements of the objects on the slide, not on the slide itself. Using a custom animation to emphasize a specific photo is a great idea so that it stands out from the rest. However, use these animations sparingly, or the effect will be lost.

7. Add Custom Timings to Picture Slides

Sit back and relax with your guests while your digital photo album plays all on its own. Adding timings will cause each photo slide to show for a specific length of time. These timings can be added to each individual slide or many slides at once to speed up the process.

8. Add Sound Effects and Music to Your Digital Photo Album

Why not add the sound of a big splash when Uncle Horace dives into the pool? Or play a beautiful classical piece while you watch your daughter walk up the aisle. You can even record a narration to play in the background during the slide show. It is a quick and easy process to add any sound file to a PowerPoint photo album.

9. Create a Web Page of Your Digital Photo Album

When the digital photo album is complete, it is just a matter of a few quick clicks to turn this photo album into a web page. You can then email it to family members or post it on your own personal web site.
