Any word processing program, will allow you to save its document in rich text format (more commonly called an RTF document). This format retains the font formatting in the document but allows it to be read by any other word processing program, so it is useful if you get documents from colleagues or clients who have different software than you do.

Now, moving on to PowerPoint, you can also create outlines of your presentations as RTF documents that might be useful because (and these are only a few examples):
  • outline can be read in any word processing program, text editor, on a computer or a cell phone
  • edits can be made easily to the text content
  • your boss may only be interested in the content of the presentation
  • an RTF document is a very small file size -- great for emailing
